A quantum of physicists to take over the Murray Bridge

Some of the brightest minds in the international physics community will be descending on the Murray Bridge this Wednesday as the Bridgeport Hotel hosts Meta Together, the first annual conference of TMOS, the ARC Centre of Excellence for Transformative Meta-Optical Systems.
Centre Director Dragomir Neshev says, “We chose the Murray Bridge because we wanted an intimate setting for our conference. Some of the most exciting technological developments of the past few decades started with a conversation over a drink and some good food. We’re seeking to add to that. We want to see deep collaborations develop during a bushwalk through the beautiful Murray Bridge landscape.”
Meta-optics is the use of nanostructured materials thinner than a piece of cling wrap to replace traditional lenses. It is the future of entertainment devices such as augmented reality and virtual reality, but the impact of this technology will be felt across all industries.
“Some of the researchers attending this conference are developing lenses that could enable your phone to do at home disease detection. Other researchers are developing single-photon emitters that will enable secure quantum communication, preventing data breaches such as the ones that Optus and Medibank customers have experienced recently.
“But by far the project that I’m most excited about is moving, coloured holograms, the kind you seen in Star Wars and Star Trek. Holograms are one of the main reasons our Chief Investigators banded together to form TMOS. Perhaps it will be here, in the Murray Bridge, that the vision becomes reality.”
Meta Together will run from Wednesday 23rd to Friday 26th of November. The general public is welcome to attend the Centre’s poster session on Thursday between 6 and 7 PM where the Centre’s research will be presented in poster format.
